Why Do ID TECH Devices Not Support Firmware Updates over Bluetooth?

ID TECH devices that support Bluetooth are not designed to support firmware updates over Bluetooth for the following reasons:

  1. Current calculations on the baud rate and firmware size of, for example, the VP3300, indicate a minimum load time of 40 minutes.  More complex devices would result in longer durations.
  2. During that time, if the unit loses BT connection during the firmware update procedure, the unit can be stuck in bootloader mode.  The only way to recover would be by connecting via the USB port using another application on a PC or Android host.
  3. Due to these reasons, ID TECH has not added the ability to update firmware via Bluetooth, and the bootloader utility does not therefore support this function.

If you have questions regarding firmware updates, please review the firmware update articles on the associated hardware page and/or contact our technical support for assistance.
