I have tried to read a credit card in Notepad and there is no output there. But the green LED on the reader blinks which seems the card is being read.  How do I find out whether the reader is in USB/KB or USB/HID mode? And how can I tell whether the encryption is being activated?

You can use SecrRED USB Demo to check the interface type and the security level of the card reader by following the steps below:

  1. Launch the SecuRED Demo V1.06.zip with the SecuRED connected directly to a USB port on a PC
  2. Select the USB first once launched into the Demo and wait for the Demo to connect to the reader so the other options will be available in the menu bar.
  3. Type in 52 23 command in the top window and click the Send Command and the response should show up in the bottom window. If the response contains "23 01 30", it means the device is set to work in the USB/HID mode; if the response contains "23 01 38", it means the device is set to work in the USB/KB mode.  Notepad will only show the data with the reader set to USB/KB mode.
  4. To check the security level, select the "Get Security Level" in the MSR Security pull down menu.  The response should have "7E 01 33" if the encryption is being activated. If "7E 01 31" then the reader has not been key injected yet.
