Why is my VP3300 not Reading the Inserted Chip Card?

The VP3300 is a small, EMV compliant card reader which can offer insert, swipe, and contactless reading capability in a form factor only 0.57 inches (14.5 mm) deep (or 0.75 inches (19 mm) for the Bluetooth variant).  To achieve this, the design requires that the insert chip reader is housed in the rear part of the body.  This means that the card insertion can be seen as counter-intuitive in that if the front of the VP3300 is facing you, then the chip on the card needs to be facing away from you to be successfully read.

This image shows how not to insert the card into the reader.  The front face of the VP3300 showing the LEDs and logos is facing the user.  This will result in a misread if the card is fully inserted.

This image however shows how a card is correctly inserted.  The chip on the card is facing away from the user, while the front face of the VP3300 with the LEDs and logos is available to view.
