Can ID TECH Tell Me What AIDs, CAPKs, and Terminal Settings I Need to Load on My EMV Reader?

EMV readers must be "initialized" with the proper AIDs, CAPKs, and Terminal settings to work. Together these three things make up an EMV Configuration Profile. Profiles differ depending upon many factors, such as supported card brands, desired terminal settings (for example, Unattended vs Attended), and the country intended for deployment.

We (ID TECH's support team) are often asked how a configuration profile should be set. When a reader completes the tests required for an EMV L3 certification with an app, a terminal, and a backend processor, you can determine the required AIDs, CAPKs, and terminal settings:

  • The backend processor must identify the targeted card brands to support.

  • The reader must pass a suite of tests for each card brand.

  • Each suite of tests will specify the required AIDs, CAPKs, and terminal settings.

If you are using a solution that is already EMV L3 certified (like a virtual terminal solution), the provider must tell you what specific reader to use and provide a specific configuration profile.
