How to Pair VP5300 Reader with an L80 PINpad

Overview

This article describes the steps for pairing a VP5300 reader with an L80 PINpad.

Before You Begin

Pairing VP5300 with L80 PIN pad requires the below items.

  • VP5300 (Pictured with Removal Detection Sensor plate affixed)

  • L80 PINpad

  • 80152210-001 (Power/USB cable)

  • 80180213-001 (PIN pad cable)

  • AC0005R-28 (Power Adapter)

Universal SDK Demo App 

To access the VP5300’s functions and settings, you must install the SDK Demo app. Make sure to install the SDK Demo app’s latest version: Universal Library for Visual Studio - Home.  

Note that the final firmware release version for VP5300 readers is v1.03.010.0496. Starting with v1.03.010.0496 and later, pairing the reader and PINpad does not require you to press the removal sensor button. Firmware versions prior to v1.03.010.0496 still require you to either press the removal sensor button where designated or use the remove detection plate to keep it pressed (pictured above).

Pairing the Reader and PINpad 

Connect the VP5300 and the L80 as shown below.

After connecting the components above, plug the power adapter into a power outlet. The VP5300 should emit a long beep and the L80 a short beep. The L80’s screen displays everything shown below from CERTIFICATE Checking through Ready.

Performing the Pairing Process

Pairing a VP5300 to an L80 has three main steps:

Change Default Password

The first step in the pairing process is to change the SmartPIN L80’s default password.

Note: For this step, the L80’s USB connector is not plugged into the host computer.

Note: Read the steps below before you begin! The button presses in Step 3 must be done very quickly! You must complete it within two seconds at the SmartPIN L80 loading screen.

  1. Verify the L80’s USB connector is not plugged into the host computer, then unplug the L80’s power connector from the Power/USB cable.

  2. Plug the L80’s power connector back into the Power/USB cable.

  3. When the L80’s LCD screen displays SmartPIN L80 V1.XX.XXX.X, you must enter the following keys within two seconds to perform the Reset Default Password sequence. Make sure there is a beep at each press of the button on the L80.

    Red -> 5 -> Green -> 0 -> 5 → Green

    1. NOTE: Make sure the device beeps after each button press to ensure the input is registered.

  4. As soon as the Reset Default Password sequence is complete, the L80 is in Change Password Mode and starts to beep. The L80’s screen displays Please input 1st password:. There are two default passwords to use: 12345678 and 87654321.
    Note: It does matter which default password is used first as long one is used for the first password and the other is used for the second password.
    This document uses 12345678 as the first default password and 87654321 as the second default password. Enter 12345678.

    1. You must enter the first default password within the two second limit or the L80 will emit three short beeps and exit Change Password Mode.

    2. If you enter 12345678 incorrectly, the screen displays Wrong Password and will emit three short beeps and exit Change Password Mode.

    3. If the L80 exits password change mode exits, return to step 1 and begin again.

    4. NOTE: Make sure the device beeps after each button press to ensure the input is registered.

  5. The screen will now display Please enter new password (this will be New Password 1). Note that you may use any desired eight-digit password. Make sure to write down the password! This document uses 11111111 as New Password 1 and 22222222 as New Password 2. Enter 11111111 (eight ones).

    1. If this step takes too long, the screen will display Timed Out, emit three short beeps, and exit Change Password Mode. Return to step one and begin again.

    2. NOTE: DO NOT make mistakes on entering 11111111. Make sure the device beeps after each button press to ensure the input is registered.

  6. The screen will now display Please input new password again. Please enter 11111111 again to confirm Password 1.

    1. If the new password confirmation does not match, the screen will display Wrong Password, emit three short beeps, and exit Change Password Mode.

    2. If password takes too long to enter, the screen will display Timed Out, emit three short beeps, and exit Change Password Mode.

    3. Start over from step 1. 

    4. NOTE: Make sure the device beeps after each button press to ensure the input is registered.

  7. When Password 1 is entered correctly, the screen displays Modify success.

  8. Next, the L80 screen will display Please input 2nd password:. The second default password is 87654321.

    1. If entering the second default password takes too long, the screen will display Timed out, emit three short beeps, and exit Change Password Mode.

    2. If you enter 87654321 wrong, the screen will say Password Wrong, emit three short beeps, and exit Change Password Mode.

    3. If this happens, follow steps 1 through 3 and continue from this step.

    4. NOTE: Make sure the device beeps after each button press to ensure the input is registered.

  9. The L80 will now display Please input new password: (this will be New Password 2). Enter 22222222 (eight twos).

    1. If this step takes too long, the screen will display Timed Out, emit three short beeps, and exit Change Password Mode.

    2. If this happens, start over from steps 1 through 3 and continue from step 8.

    3. NOTE: DO NOT make mistakes on entering 22222222. Make sure the device beeps after each button press to ensure the input is registered.

  10. The L80 will now display Please input new password again:. Enter 22222222 to confirm New Password 2.

    1. If you take too long to enter New Password 2, the screen will display Time out, emit three short beeps, and exit Change Password Mode.

    2. If the password is entered incorrectly, the screen will display Password wrong, emit three short beeps, and exit Change Password Mode.

    3. Start over from steps 1 through 3, then continue from step 8.

    4. NOTE: Make sure the device beeps after each button press to ensure the input is registered.

  11. If New Password 2 is entered correctly, the screen will display Modify success.

  12. The screen will now display Please input 1st new password:. Enter 11111111.

    1. NOTE: Make sure the device beeps after each button press to ensure the input is registered.

  13. Next screen will display Please input 2nd new password:. Enter 22222222.

    1. NOTE: Make sure the device beeps after each button press to ensure the input is registered.

  14. The screen will now display Select Device: Enable CR with Enable CR highlighted.

  15. Wait until L80 times out and the screen displays Ready. 

Initiate Pairing on the VP5300

This section uses the SDK Demo app to start the VP5300’s pairing mode. During this section, VP5300 readers using firmware earlier than v1.03.010.0496 require you to press the remove detection button.

  1. If the firmware version is earlier than v1.03.010.0496, press and hold the removal detection button or use the removal detection plate (see below).

  2. Plug the VP5300’s USB connector into your computer.

  3. Open the SDK Demo app. The connected device and its serial number are displayed at the top left and bottom left corners of the window.

  4. Under COMMAND pane, select Device → Send NEO Command.

  5. In the gray pane, enter 63 for Cmd and 01 for Sub (be sure to select the v2 radio button).

  6. Select Execute Command. When the command completes, the results pane returns Send P2 Command successful.

  1. Unplug the VP5300’s USB connector from your computer.

Finalize Pairing

This step confirms the device pairing on the L80. During this section, VP5300 readers using firmware earlier than v1.03.010.0496 require you to press the remove detection button.

  1. If the firmware version is lower than v1.03.010.0496, press and hold the removal detection button or use the removal detection plate (see below).

  1. Plug the USB back into the computer.

  2. On the L80’s firmware screen, enter the password change mode code (Red -> 5 -> Green -> 0 -> 5 → Green).

    1. NOTE: Make sure the device beeps after each button press to ensure the input is registered.

  3. When prompted, enter New Password 1 (11111111).

    1. NOTE: Make sure the device beeps after each button press to ensure the input is registered.

  4. Display will ask for New Password 2 (22222222).

    1. NOTE: Make sure the device beeps after each button press to ensure the input is registered.

  5. The L80’s screen will now display Select Device: Enable CR with Enable CR highlighted.

  6. Press the green enter button.

    1. NOTE: Make sure the device beeps after each button press to ensure the input is registered. 

  1. The L80’s display will flash Activate CR, then Activate successful, and then return to the Ready screen.

The L80 is now paired to VP5300. If you need to connect the L80 to another VP5300, you do not need to unpair it; simply complete the pairing process with the new VP5300, starting with Initiate Pairing on the VP5300 and finishing with Finalize Pairing. There are no unpairing steps for L80 and VP5300 devices.
